Huge vistas and spectacular rock walls greet you as you travel by little clay towns and historic kasbahs, making a magnificent canyon. Let yourself be fascinated by the Todra Gorge’s beautiful landscape, an experience in Morocco that should be noticed on any Morocco Sahara desert tour!

This travel guide will provide the necessary information and recommendations for visiting Todra Gorge in Morocco. We also show you amazing photos and the most stunning sites.

TODGHA GORGE: GENERAL INFORMATION

Morocco’s Todra Gorge, also known as Gorges du Todgha, is a must-see on a round-trip around Morocco. This fantastic rocky canyon is located at the height of 1,400 meters in the Atlas Mountains. It borders Tinghir, a city of 44,000 people and one of the most beautiful oases in southern Morocco. On its route south, the Oued Todra carved this spectacular gorge through the mountain range for thousands of years. The latter section of the canyon is particularly worth viewing in this location. The canyon walls are up to 300 meters high, and the canyon is barely 10 meters wide in some places. On every road journey, the passage is a very fantastic experience!

Climbers and hikers will both get their time’s worth at the Todra Gorge, which offers a variety of climbing and trekking routes. As a result, many people still need to take in the breathtaking scenery. However, merely driving down this massive, stunning canyon, past ancient Berber Villages, brown clay Kasbahs, and green palm groves, are well worth the journey!

THE OASIS OF TINGHIR

The breathtaking beauty of the green, lush oases, and the many date palms flourishing in the valley greets visitors as soon as they arrive in Tinghir. The trek continues from the oasis town along a 15-kilometer route in the direction of Todra Gorge. The red rocky scenery will astound you along the trip. Combined with the tiny mud-brick villages and beautiful palm trees, creates a picture-perfect backdrop.

In Tinghir, you may stroll around the oasis gardens and observe the agriculture up close. Local guides would happily take you on a tour of the stunning terrain and show you around the oasis’ most picturesque spots. The short journey takes you past irrigation ditches, across farmland, and into palm groves. This way, you can get a sense of the local agriculture while still taking stunning trip images.

You will learn about Thinghir’s most beautiful side during a one-hour tour. Finally, you arrive at a hilltop, where you can see the historic ruins of Kasbahs. You may get a great perspective of the vast oasis valley up there.

THE GORGE OF TODRA

The Todra Gorge begins just outside Tinghir, and driving through this massive yet small canyon is a unique experience. The steep granite walls rise on both sides of the Todra River, and the Todra Gorge is one of the most beautiful canyons in the world, with cliffs that reach up to 400 meters in height.

Also striking is the contrast between the green oasis and the red rock. Take your time riding across the gorge and make several stops. Here you can find fantastic picture motifs and perspectives. Climbers from all over the world go to the massive red cliffs. The red walls provide hundreds of climbing routes, but hikers also get their time’s worth with the numerous pathways.

The last 600 meters at the end of the Todra Gorge are the most stunning. The canyon gets extremely tight when the distance between one wall and the next is only 10 meters. The massive red granite walls that run the length of that section of the gorge extend up to 160 meters. The area is lovely and provides one of Morocco’s most incredible picture opportunities.

Be aware that the Todra Gorge is one of Morocco’s most beautiful sights and a popular tourist destination. To avoid crowds, visit the gorge early in the morning or late in the afternoon after the buses have left.
