The Toubkal circuit trek is the perfect way to spend seven days in the High Atlas mountains of Morocco. You’ll get to see beautiful panoramas, explore Berber villages and culture, and immerse yourself in everyday Berber life. You’ll trek to a new location every day, with early starts and strenuous days. But it will all be worth it when you reach the summit of Jebel Toubkal at 4167m and take in the stunning views. At the end of each day, you can relax in village cafes, enjoy a cup of mint tea with the Berbers or paddle alongside refreshing rivers and the turquoise shores of Lac D’ifni at 2295m.
After breakfast, we set out from Marrakech, making our way to Imlil valley via Asni. Imlil is a popular destination for hikers and a bustling market town. There is a constant flow of hikers coming down the mountain and an equal amount of activity from those about to embark on their adventure. We meet our team, and once all our equipment is loaded, we start walking along the valley towards Tacheddirt, some 8kms beyond Imlil. Soon, the trail begins to incline as we climb to Tizi N’Tamatert (2279m). We then descend into the pretty village of Ouaneskra and continue for another half-hour until we reach Tacheddirt (3000m), where we usually camp near the river.
We venture across the valley, the beginning of an ambitious journey up Tizi Likemt (3555m). The path is tough and filled with obstacles, yet we press on. As we reach our destination, at last, the magnificent sight of Mount Toubkal appears before us; its beauty inspires us for what lies ahead – a long descent down into Azib Likemt, where our base camp awaits.
This exciting yet manageable journey brings us through a wealth of diverse scenery. From the summit of Tizi Ououraine (3120m), we can glimpse impressive vistas such as those seen from mighty Mount Toubkal, Ifni’s crest, and The Dome (3876m). We then venture to Amsouzert – one of the region’s most picturesque villages – where we rest in cozy dormitories before continuing on our adventure.
West Amsouzert is a series of small villages we will explore today as we make our way to Lake Ifni, the only lake in the mountains. This is an unforgettable sight, surrounded by rocky mountains and giant piles of rubble, and it is profound. We expect to arrive before noon and spend the afternoon relaxing at the lake side. In the evening we camp in this area.
We stride boldly towards the most challenging day of our journey. Our path is a winding, rocky incline that seems to stretch on forever. At last, we reach the Tizi n’Ouanoums (3664m), an awe-inspiring shelf between two trees. After following its meandering route downwards, we arrive at Nelter Hut – either snuggling into its shelter or camping in nature’s embrace for the night! We are well-prepared and confident; this will be a victorious trek!
We set out before dawn, taking the well-worn route to the summit. If the conditions are right, it shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours to reach the top, where we’ll have a clear view of the range and Atlas Marrakech plain beyond. Then we’ll head back to base quickly enough to make it to the villages of Sidi Chamharouch and Aremd before Mizane. Finally, we’ll follow the river along a wooded path to the trailhead at Imlil.
Start your day with a delicious breakfast at our lodge. Then, head south to the Berber village of Aroumd. As you walk up and down the stark slopes, you’ll have the jagged Western High Atlas peaks of the Toubkal Massif before you. Mount Aguelzim (3,547m), Aksouâl (3,847m), and the Adrar Adj (3,122m) will watch over you the whole way. Stop for a nature-filled lunch, and then head back to the lodge. Relax with a shower before we transfer you to Marrakech.
