The spectacular Mgoun Massif offers a breathtaking view as the southernmost of three ridges that make up the High Atlas. Embark on an awe-inspiring adventure in Central Atlas, beginning with a trek through Ait Bougemez’s gorgeous valley. Experience nature at its finest and get to know welcoming Berbers while exploring this wild area rarely traveled by tourists. unlike Jebel Toubkal region, better known for its tourist infrastructure.
Many hikers believe that the scenery here is even more beautiful than you would find elsewhere. With its extensive terracing, broad green valleys pierced by irrigation canals, areas of walnut copses, and strange rock formations and colors, it’s easy to see why. And then there’s the bonus of Mgoun Peak towering over everything at just over 4000 meters tall. That’s only slightly less than Toubkal itself! All in all, it makes for a fascinating mountain to climb. Instead of endless scree fields, the ‘Alpine start’ takes you to a high roller coaster ridge. From there, you can follow above and past a vast cirque (corrie) until you reach the summit. We have watched Lammergeiers land on this high point in previous years!
The five-day Mt M’Goun trek is the perfect way to explore Morocco’s stunning Ait Bougamez and M’Goun valleys. As the sun rises, we bid farewell to our haven in the valley and march forward into Arrous. Ascending its winding trails leads us up onto majestic gorges that stretch before us for miles. After a nourishing lunch break, we take on an inspiring hike along Imi N’kkis’ lush summer pastures until nightfall, when it is time to set up camp beneath canopies of stars! An exhilarating 5 hours awaits you – so come join us as adventure beckons.
As we continue our ascent up Mgoun, we’ll eventually reach the Tizi-n-Oumskiyd, and Aghouri passes. From there, we’ll be treated to stunning views of the Mgoun Ridge and the Tarkeddite plateau. Then, after a brief rest, we’ll descend to the vast Berber people’s summer pasture. This 8-hour trek will be an experience you won’t soon forget! You’ll spend the night in tents.
Today we will climb up to the magnificent Jebel Mgoun, the only 4000 m peak that lies outside Toubkal Region. We will be treated to stunning views of the mountains and panoramic vistas of the High Atlas Mountains stretching out in all directions. After a well-earned rest, we will descend into the Oulilimt valley for overnight camping under the stars. The estimated duration for this trek is 8 hours.
On the final day of our Mgoun Valley hike, we will ascend to Tizi n’Ait Imi pass. From here, we will enjoy stunning views in all directions. We may encounter some friendly nomads living in caves or small mountain shelters during our journey. After reaching the pass’s summit, it is a long downhill walk to Happy Valley. We will stop for lunch at Ait Imi Village before continuing on to Timit for an overnight stay at a guest house. This leg of the trip should take us approximately 6-7 hours to complete.
